A policewoman has wounds to her head and hand after a man lashed at her with a screwdriver on a Melbourne street.

Police on Friday said the man was loitering around cars in a residential Cranbourne North street in the early hours of Thursday when he lashed out at officers and injured the policewoman.

The senior constable suffered a cut to the side of her head and a defensive wound to her hand.

The St Kilda man, 41, was arrested and later charged with intentionally causing serious injury, assaulting police and attempted aggravated burglary.

He was remanded to appear in the Dandenong Magistrates' Court at a later date.
