A convicted rapist who absconded from a Melbourne disability treatment facility could be on his way to Mildura, police say.

Christopher Austin fled the Disability Forensic Assessment and Treatment Service in Fairfield at about 11.30pm on Tuesday.

Austin was serving a five-year residential placement order after committing a sexual assault.

A man fitting Austin's description was seen at 6am on Wednesday in Kew East, pushing a mountain bike along the Main Yarra Trail near Willow Grove, wearing shorts and a jumper.

Austin - who has an intellectual disability - had two years remaining on his order after being convicted of rape.

He has dollar sign tattoos on his leg and finger and a rat's tail hairstyle.

Police have warned members of the public not to approach him.
