Vic smelter's future still under a cloud

The regional Victorian community trying to keep its struggling aluminium smelter from closing won't know if their jobs are safe until after Christmas.

Alcoa's executives are considering an offer from the Australian and Victorian governments to keep the Portland smelter open after a power failure in early December damaged equipment at the already-struggling plant.

"It means an uncertain future for a whole community and 600-odd direct employees ... (but) given that one of the alternatives is closure the fact that we're still in the game and talking about the future is a positive sign," Australian Workers Union state secretary Ben Davis told 3AW on Thursday.
