Thieves tried to blowtorch their way into a Melbourne optometrist, before ramming the shop's roller door with a ute to steal $85,000 worth of sunglasses and prescription glasses.

At least two men targeted the Footscray optometrist in the early hours of Monday morning, forcing a big hole in the side of the shop and running off with up to 250 pairs of glasses.

"They were sort of top range valued at about 400 bucks each," Detective Senior Constable Craig Wright told 3AW on Wednesday.
