A violent carjacking in South Australia could be linked to the young man who escaped a Victorian juvenile jail two days ago.

Lachlan Mitchell, 20, fled the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre on Tuesday and got into a black ute waiting for him with South Australian number plates.

On Thursday morning, two people in a black ute held up a driver at gunpoint in Mil-Lel near Mount Gambier after a minor crash, SA police say.

The duo then stole the person's car and abandoned their ute.

Police were searching the area on Thursday after the stolen ute was found dumped in same suburb.

SA police say they're investigating links to Mitchell.

On Tuesday, Victoria Police chased a black ute fitting the description of the getaway car twice in Ballarat but weren't able to apprehend the drivers.

A spokeswoman from Victoria Police said it would not be commenting on the investigation and wouldn't say if police officers were heading to South Australia.

Mitchell is serving a 12-month sentence for serious driving and firearm offences.
