Vics aim for big Shield win over SA

Victoria feel they owe South Australia as they try to open up a solid lead at the top of the Sheffield Shield cricket ladder.

The Bushrangers will host the Redbacks at the MCG from Saturday in an important clash.

Victoria have started the season with three Shield wins and SA are on their heels.

The Bushrangers have won their last two matches against the Redbacks, including the 2015-16 Shield final.

But SA also came to the MCG nearly a year ago, when Victoria were again unbeaten, and won by eight wickets.

"We owe them a fair bit now, because they've had the wood on us over the last couple of years," said Victorian pacemen John Hastings.

"We need to go out there and put a strong performance on the board."

Hastings said a fourth-straight win would set up the Bushrangers "massively" for the second half of the season.

Last summer, Victoria faltered badly late in the Shield, before hanging on to make the final and eventually beating the Redbacks.

"There's a lot of one-day cricket at the back end of the summer, so if we lose guys here or there, we've got to have those wins on the board," Hastings said.

"Now is the time to strike while we have pretty much our full squad."

While Hastings is a handy addition to the Victorian squad after recovering from a broken finger, the Australian one-day bowler is no guarantee to be picked because the Bushrangers are playing so well.

They also have recalled Aaron Finch and Sam Harper, while SA are at full strength following the return of Callum Ferguson, Chadd Sayers and Joe Mennie..

Squads (12th men to be named):

Victoria: Cameron White (captain), Scott Boland, Dan Christian, Travis Dean, Aaron Finch, Sam Harper, Marcus Harris, John Hastings, Jon Holland, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Chris Tremain.

SA: Travis Head, Nick Benton, Alex Carey, Tom Cooper, Callum Ferguson, Jake Lehmann, Joe Mennie, Kane Richardson, Chadd Sayers, Kelvin Smith, Jake Weatherald, Adam Zampa.
