Victoria trials professional foster carers

Victoria will trial professional foster carers who will work with at least 28 children over two years to keep them out of residential care.

The $5.6 million trial is based on an international model of full-time carers taking on children with serious emotional and behavioural problems.

"Nothing is more important than helping our vulnerable children, and professional foster carers will help complement the work of thousands of volunteer foster, kinship and permanent carers across Victoria," Childrens Minister Jenny Mikakos said in a statement on Thursday.

During the trial 14 carers will look after a child in their home for six to nine months before they return home or to another home-based care arrangement.
