DOMESTIC MURDER CASES IN VICTORIA DURING 2016:

* Craig McDermott jailed for 25 years for fatally stabbing his former partner Fiona Warzywoda not long after a court banned him from approaching her. Ordered to serve at least 20 years.

* Makeny Banek, 24, in August pleads guilty to stabbing 20-year-old law student Abuk Akek after she left him because he repeatedly bashed and abused her. Yet to be sentenced.

* Ramesh Boodhoo, 65, pleads guilty to attempted murder after he tried to force his wife into a suicide pact in August 2015. Jailed for six and a half years.

* Former British Army major David Whitelegg strangled his wife Anne Whitelegg, 59, in a murderous rage after she had talked about leaving him in September, 2014. In July he was jailed for 18 years, with a minimum of 14.

* Bassam Raad charged with killing his wife Zeinab Taleb whose battered body was found dumped about two kilometres from the family's Broadmeadows home in June.

* In April the coroner rules Victoria's family violence system let down murder-suicide victim Kelly Thompson, 43, who was sleeping in her home when her ex, Wayne Wood, stabbed her to death with a hunting knife in February 2014.

* Fernando Manuel Paulino in April committed to stand trial for murdering his wife of 20 years, Teresa Mancuso, 49, found stabbed to death in her Reservoir home in July 2013.

* Victoria's Court of Appeal rules an 18-and-a-half-year jail term for the "savage and merciless" domestic murder of Maryanne Sikai at the hands of her ex-boyfriend Isac Ayoul Daing is within available range.

* Robert Penny, 83, died in March before facing court on charges of murdering his wife Margaret and her hairdresser Claire Acocks on May 3, 1991. The women were found beaten, stabbed and had their throats slit.

* Melbourne man Seker Yildiz, 60, in January committed to stand trial for murder after a court heard he walked into a police station and said he'd killed his wife of 30 years with an axe.
