A Victorian man who sexually abused his granddaughter from the time she was seven years old had told her to keep it a secret from her grandma.

The 73-year-old man was jailed for five-and-a-half years on Thursday for sexually abusing the girl between 2002 and 2005.

The County Court sentencing judge said the man had exploited the girl in her tender years and caused her psychological damage.

"Your conduct must be utterly condemned," he said.

The accused had pleaded guilty to one count of incest and four counts of an indecent act with a child under 16.

The court heard the man had told his granddaughter not to tell her grandmother about the abuse.

It wasn't until 11 years later that the victim notified police.

The grandfather told investigators he couldn't recall the offending, but accepted what the victim said.

Her family had been torn apart by what happened and she no longer trusted anyone, according to her statement read in court by the judge

"Every day it's on my mind. I can't stop. It's in my nightmares," she said.

The judge took into account the man's remorse and guilty plea, which spared the victim the trauma of going to trial.

He will serve a minimum term of three years and three months.
