A convicted murderer, who has a history of violent offending, is wanted by police after breaking parole in Victoria.

John Douglas Hartwick, 65, was released from prison on November 1 after serving time for murder and broke his parole conditions by failing a drug test.

Police say the Norlane man has prior convictions for murder, armed robbery, assault, firearms and drug offences.

Hartwick and two others murdered Steven Borg and seriously injured his girlfriend when they set upon the couple in Frankston in 2001.

The trio appealed their convictions in 2006 at the High Court, but the appeals were dismissed.

Detective Superintendent Peter De Santo warned members of the public that the "career criminal" is dangerous and should not be approached despite having a broken ankle and wearing a moon boot.
