WA council dumps Australia Day fireworks

A West Australian council has voted in favour of ditching Australia Day fireworks out of sensitivity to Aboriginal people.

"There has been a growing movement that January 26 is increasingly becoming a day that is 'not for all Australians'. For many Aboriginal Australians it is indeed a day of sadness and dispossession," Fremantle mayor Brad Pettitt said.

The City of Fremantle says it will instead offer a family-friendly event to celebrate being Australian on an alternative date, with details yet to be finalised.
