The WA government has launched a free 24-hour meth helpline for drug addicts and their families to speak confidentially with professional counsellors.

A proposed plan for compulsory alcohol and drug treatment as a last resort has also been opened to public comment, with discussion and background papers released to promote debate and act as a guide for people who want to make submissions, Mental Health Minister Andrea Mitchell said.

The Mental Health Commission is expected to release a draft bill for community consultation before the end of the year.
