The WA government has approved Rio Tinto's plan to extend the life of one of its Pilbara iron ore mines by targeting new sources of ore.

The $18 million development will enable the company to maintain production capacity at the Western Turner Syncline mine near Tom Price at 25-30 million tonnes per annum.

State Development Minister Bill Marmion said 40 construction jobs would be created.
