A police officer in Western Australia's Pilbara has been charged over claims he drove two indigenous teenagers, aged 15 and 13, out of town and dumped them.

The officer, from South Hedland in the Pilbara, was charged with unlawful assault and reckless driving after an internal affairs investigation into the June incident which involved rocks being thrown at cars. Two other officers were also investigated and remain on suspension.

The incident was one of a series of clashes between police and indigenous youths which prompted an investigation into possible cultural problems at the police station.
