A 19-year-old man who tried to sell drugs to undercover police officers has failed in his bid to secure a spent conviction.

Sean Gary Perfit Hayman was charged with possession of a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply after he offered ecstasy to the officers outside Metro City nightclub in Perth on January 22.

On Friday, magistrate Felicity Zempilas handed Hayman a 12-month community-based order and charged him substance analysis fees of $550 along with $88.50 in court costs.

But she rejected his request for a spent conviction, noting he had engaged in the "fairly unsophisticated" enterprise because he had financial problems, but dealing drugs was too serious to not go on his record.
