A volunteer firefighter who admitted deliberately lighting a bushfire in Western Australia and falsely reporting two other blazes has won an appeal against his sentence.

Jourdan Dean Ashford reported his own fire to authorities in 2014 and went to the scene with the Bedfordale Bushfire Brigade, with the blaze extinguished in less than 10 minutes.

He was sentenced to 12 months in jail but took his case to the WA Court of Appeal, claiming it was manifestly excessive.

On Monday, the court ruled Ashford should be re-sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for nine months.
