Former NRL player and ex-bikie Anthony Watts plans to contest an assault charge stemming from a Gold Coast wedding in August.

Watts has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm after the alleged incident at a wedding in Mudgeeraba on August 19.

It's alleged the ex-North Queensland and Cronulla player assaulted another guest, leaving him with minor injuries.

But the 30-year-old's lawyer Campbell MacCallum said outside Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday his client didn't agree with police allegations against him.

"The evidence as it stands, Mr Watts doesn't agree with," Mr MacCallum said.

"It looks like at this stage we'll be defending those charges before the court. Otherwise we might be negotiating it down to a lesser charge.

"There's some allegations of some kneeing and kicking. He disputes there was any type of behaviour to that degree."

Mr MacCallum also claimed his client had endured "some sort" of provocation in the build-up to the alleged assault.

Watts is set to return to court in October.
