We thought about signing Hayne: Sharks

The stellar form of Ben Barba stopped Cronulla from making a play for Jarryd Hayne with coach Shane Flanagan revealing he toyed with the idea of trying to sign the cross-code star.

Hayne this week secured his future when he signed a two-year NRL deal with Gold Coast, who fended off interest from rival clubs and European rugby to snare the former San Francisco 49er.

Flanagan said he made very brief inquiries about Hayne but scrapped the idea because it would likely upset team harmony.

"I even thought about (trying to sign Hayne) myself, if there was an opportunity, if we had an injury early on," Flanagan said ahead of Cronulla's crunch match against Canberra on Saturday.

"My back five are going outstanding for us at the moment.

"It was an option for us but we're really comfortable with what we're doing, I didn't want to upset ours."

The Sharks would have been forced to move on players to get Hayne, who inked a $2.4 million contract with the Titans.

One of the prevailing reasons behind not making a serious play was the form of fullback Ben Barba, who has returned to his best under Flanagan this year to be in Dally M contention.

"I didn't get too far," Flanagan said when asked about negotiations.

"I'm really comfortable with what we've got this year and I didn't think it was the right move."

Barba admits the Sharks are on guard after losing to the resurgent Raiders at home last year and also having their 16-match winning run ended by an 18-all draw against Gold Coast on Monday night.

"We all know the Raiders are going pretty good. They played really well on the weekend against Souths and in the past we've always had a good tussle against them," Barba told AAP.

"So we're definitely going to have to be on our game and play a lot better than we did on the weekend if we're a chance of beating them.

"We definitely want to keep our win streak at home going and Ricky Stuart will definitely have them prepared and ready to go on the weekend."
