Australian welfare chiefs are warning a new wave of homelessness will sweep the country if federal funding is slashed.

The heads of 30 agencies, gathered in Sydney on Friday, are urging the Commonwealth to extend an agreement worth $115 million annually for another five years beyond its June 2017 expiry date.

"Without this national agreement we will see more people sleeping in our streets, in refuges, in the back of cars and in rooming houses as they're turned away from help," Homelessness Australia chair Jenny Smith said.
