Flight of the Conchords star Rhys Darby will use his improvisational skills as one of the cast members in the Australian version of Whose Line Is It Anyway.

Comedians are pitted against each other weekly in a series of on-the-spot, short-form improvisation games in front of a live audience, in the show, hosted by comic Tommy Little.

"I was interested in playing the host but I think the producers thought 'If we're going to have Rhys, let's have him play it and really utilise those talents'," Darby said.

Little auditioned to be a cast member but soon changed his mind about where he could fit in and opted for the hosting role.

He realised improvisation games aren't easy, and they aren't something every stand-up comedian can tackle.

"It would have been so easy for the network to go 'Hey let's get big name stand-up comedians and put them in those roles which is not the thing they do best'. Instead they've got the best improvisers around," Little said.

The comedians quickly learnt how to step out on stage and create moments from the use of oddly-shaped props, or how to write a song in seconds backed by the show's live band.

"My whole career has been based on me thinking on my feet and making it up as I go along because I've had no training in anything, yet here I am now landing back onto that show that inspired me from the beginning. So it's a nice circle feeling," Darby said.

Every week, different personalities compete to be the best at entertaining the audience in a quick-fire fashion.

"I think we've got the balance right. We've got a few performers who people know and love and then ones they don't know, and they are literally the most exciting young people in the country at the moment," Little said.
