The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have travelled in Canada using a sea plance, touching in Vancouver after making the 30 minute journey from nearby Victoria.

A one-way ticket for the trip costs around $C210 ($A209.17) and the Duke and Duchess would have enjoyed stunning scenic views of the British Columbian coastline.

The royal couple and their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte received a rapturous welcome from Canadians when their eight-day tour began on Saturday.

On Sunday thousands gathered on the waterfront to watch their arrival and cheered when the couple emerged from the twin engined Otter aircraft.

Kate was wearing a striking red and white Alexander McQueen outfit decorated with broderie anglaise while William looked smart in a jacket, shirt and tie.

Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau was on the harbour side to greet the couple.

Another cheer went up when the couple began a walkabout meeting some of the many well-wishers.
