The legal case against the Australian Defence Force over the Williamtown contamination scandal is moving ahead after securing funding.

A class action lawsuit was launched against the ADF in April after a firefighting chemical used five years ago at the Williamtown RAAF base, 30km north of Newcastle, was found to have contaminated soil and water in the surrounding area.

IMF Bentham announced on Wednesday that the class action had gathered enough claimants to move ahead with funding, with more than 250 people signing up to the case.
