Homes on Russell Island could come under threat from bushfire again as a predicted wind change would put homes in the path of the flames.

Emergency crews have been battling the blaze on the island in Moreton Bay, east of Brisbane, since Thursday.

So far the fire has burnt through 170 hectares but no homes have been damaged despite more than 60 coming under threat on Friday.

Backburning overnight has kept the fire contained however a wind change on Sunday afternoon could put homes on the southern part of the island back in the firing line.

Residents have been told to prepare to leave early and not rely on a knock on the door from a firefighter.

People are also being urged to protect themself from smoke that will blow into populated areas by shutting their windows and doors.

Those with respiratory problems have been told to consider leaving the area.
