A jet ski ridden by a 16-year-old has crashed into and sunk a small boat in Victoria, with Water Police seeking witnesses to the incident.

The teenager was riding the jet ski 100 metres off Portarlington Pier when he struck the tinny after 8pm on Thursday night.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said on Friday the teenager was taken to hospital and will be interviewed at a later date.

Contrary to earlier reports, he wasn't arrested, she told AAP.

The driver of the boat, a 25-year-old Hoppers Crossing man, was treated on shore for lacerations.

The Water Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, or saw the vessels prior to the crash, to contact Crime Stoppers.

Australian Volunteer Coast Guard members helped police recover the sunken boat.
