A shooting outside Melbourne Grammar School is being investigated with detectives appealing for witnesses.

Victoria Police say a man was held against his will in a car in Bromby Street in South Yarra a fortnight ago before he was able to escape and hide in nearby bushes.

After hearing a gunshot he made his way to the other side of Melbourne Grammar and into the Royal Botanic Gardens where he raised the alarm.

Police on Wednesday will set up an information caravan in the hope of finding any witnesses who saw "suspicious activity" in the area on the evening of August 24.

Police are investigating a report the victim had earlier that evening met up with an unknown man in a car in South Melbourne.
