A woman has been arrested after allegedly attacking Victorian MP Jane Garrett.

Police had said that a 43-year-old woman suffered minor injuries after she was allegedly assaulted by a woman in Carlton while walking along Drummond Street on Monday afternoon.

Several media outlets reported the woman was former emergency services minister Jane Garrett, and said the offender grabbed Ms Garrett's hair and attempted to push her through a window.

A 52-year-old woman was arrested on Monday night and is currently being interviewed, a police spokesperson said.

The Age reported that Premier Daniel Andrews phoned Ms Garrett following the attack and offered her support.

Numerous Victorian MPs took to social media to relay their shock.

"I'm horrified by reports that @Jane_GarrettMP has been attacked today. Hope she is ok and her assailant is caught," opposition spokeswoman on women's health Margaret Fitzherbert wrote.

"Just heard the terrible news that @Jane_GarrettMP has been assaulted in Carlton. Hope she is okay. My thoughts are with her + her family," Greens MP for Melbourne Ellen Sandell said.

Ms Garrett resigned as emergency services minister in June this year, refusing to support the controversial CFA pay deal.
