A young woman has been charged after allegedly holding her grandmother hostage at knifepoint in a seven-hour siege on the Gold Coast.

The 17-year-old woman has been charged with serious assault of a person over 60, assault occasioning bodily harm, and deprivation of liberty.

She will face Southport Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon.

Police say both women are undergoing checks in hospital but neither is seriously hurt.

Neighbours have told of a massive police operation to end the siege at Southport in the early hours of Friday.

Police were called to the home about 9.30pm on Thursday and issued an emergency declaration when the younger woman refused to come out.

Heavily armed officers waited until dawn to storm the property, taking her into custody.

One neighbour told the Nine Network officers tore down part of a fence as they responded to the drama.

Police later said the grandmother was aged 61 and had suffered only minor injuries during her ordeal.
