A woman is dead after a Northern Territory driver rolled his car while being more than four times over the legal drinking limit.

Six people were in the car when it crashed on the Roper Highway in the Mataranka district about 8.30pm on Thursday.

NT Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said the female passenger died while the others had mostly minor injuries.

The driver has been arrested and is likely to be charged with dangerous driving causing death and drink driving, after allegedly blowing .229 in a road-side breath test.

"It's over four times the legal limit," she said.
