A 17-year-old girl who allegedly held her grandmother hostage at knifepoint for seven hours on the Gold Coast will remain in custody until at least early next month.

Rhiannon Peatey faced Southport Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon, charged with serious assault of a person over 60, assault occasioning bodily harm, and deprivation of liberty.

Police said both women underwent checks in hospital after the stand-off, but neither was seriously hurt.

Neighbours have told of a large police operation to end the siege at Southport in the early hours of Friday.

Police were called to the home about 9.30pm on Thursday and issued an emergency declaration when the younger woman allegedly refused to come out.

Heavily armed police waited until dawn to storm the property, taking her into custody.

One neighbour told the Nine Network officers tore down part of a fence as they responded.

Police later said the grandmother was aged 61 and had suffered only minor injuries during her ordeal.

Peatey is due to return to court on November 4.
