A woman in Melbourne jumped on the bonnet of a car in an attempt to stop a thief driving off with a six-month-old girl inside.

Police say the "very brazen" thief got into the Mercedes as the mother and a friend were chatting right next to the car outside a Coburg school at 3pm.

The friend jumped on to the bonnet of the car as the thief began driving off, screaming for him to stop.

"Even though she's screaming through the window at him that there was a baby in the back seat, he refused to stop," Moreland Senior Constable Virginia Creece told 3AW.

The woman was on the bonnet for a good 400 metres before she fell off, but is OK, police say.

The car was found a short time later about 2km away from the school.

The person who found the car told police the man fled on foot, leaving the baby inside safe and well.

"She wasn't distressed in any way, thank God," Sen Const Creece said of the baby.

The man remains on the run. He is described as being aged in his 30s, with dark wavy hair and wearing a light-coloured T-shirt and black pants.
