A brave woman has snatched her dog back from the jaws of a crocodile at a waterway in suburban Darwin.

The 52-year-old woman was walking her two pooches at Durack on Saturday morning when one was snatched by a croc.

She bravely jumped into knee-deep water to save her furry four-legged friend, which had only moments before been sitting on the edge of a causeway minding its own business.

"She cares greatly for her dogs and her natural instinct was to run into the water and save the one that had been taken, which is pretty brave," Superintendent James O'Brien said on the NT police service's Facebook page.

"Of course, we recommend not jumping into any body of water where crocodiles are, or may be, present."

Amazingly the dog only suffered minor scratches during the ordeal.

Supt O'Brien said the incident served as a timely reminder about the dangers posed by crocs around waterways in suburban areas.
