A man has been arrested after a Darwin bank teller was stabbed in the neck.

A 33-year-old man remains in custody after the violent attack at the bank in Casuarina about at 10.30am on Monday.

Police say the man became agitated after a dispute and pulled a knife on the female worker.

"She suffered a stabbing to the neck and received stitches in hospital," NT duty superintendent Robert Burgoyne said.

The man allegedly escaped on a push bike but was arrested a short time later at a property in Malak.

Police are appealing for witnesses but believe the attack was random and not an attempted hold up.

The man is expected to be charged with aggravated assault and being armed with an offensive weapon.
