The partner of a handcuffed prisoner who escaped police custody at Darwin hospital has been charged with aiding his getaway.

Rachel Chatfield, 37, will face Darwin Local Court on Thursday after Kim Thomas Riley, 27, escaped from Royal Darwin Hospital on Monday evening while being assessed after complaining of chest pains.

Police say he was picked up by Ms Chatfield and they drove more than 700km south to Elliott, where he left her and her two young children on the side of the Stuart Highway before continuing on several hundred kilometres to Borroloola.

Police said he ran out of petrol and was found hiding under a log near Cape Crawford, where he was arrested without incident on Wednesday afternoon.

A police spokesman said Riley was still wearing his handcuffs and appeared to have an injured foot.
