A man who allegedly tried to steal a bag of gold worth $94,000 from a motorist on Sydney's north shore has been charged.

The 50-year-old victim was dropping a female passenger off in Chatswood on November 6 when it's alleged the 46-year-old thief got into the man's car, hit him in the face with a metal object, and snatched the bag.

The victim gave chase and a fight broke out between the pair, before the older man managed to wrestle back the gold.

Police say the younger man was arrested at a Dee Why unit block on Tuesday morning, before being charged with robbery armed with offensive weapon.

He has been refused bail and is due to appear at Manly Local Court on Wednesday.
