A five-year-old boy has been flown to hospital after he was run over by his family's car at their Sunshine Coast hinterland property.

It's believed the child was playing in the car on Tuesday morning when he released the handbrake, causing it to roll backwards over a retaining wall.

He managed to jump out but was struck by the vehicle. He was airlifted by RACQ LifeFlight Rescue to Brisbane's Lady Cilento Children's Hospital.
