Venezuelan maestro Gustavo Dudamel has led the Vienna Philharmonic in a lively performance for the New Year's Day concert, becoming the youngest conductor to direct the renowned orchestra.

The 35-year-old Dudamel led the Philharmonic through a joyous program in the Golden Hall of Vienna's Musikverein, the largest concert hall in the Austrian capital.

The traditional New Year's Day concert was watched on television by an estimated 50 million people in 93 countries.

Dudamel joined the list of legendary conductors, including Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, Carlos Kleiber, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Seiji Ozawa and Daniel Barenboim, who have taken up the baton for the New Year's Day concert.

The Vienna Philharmonic announced that Muti would conduct the 2018 New Year's Day concert.

In 2017, the Vienna Philharmonic is celebrating its 175th anniversary. Only a few hundred lucky people get to watch the concert live at the Musikverein after winning a draw for tickets.
