Hyundai's New Three-Row SUV Will Be Called the Palisade

Hyundai's Santa Fe range of crossovers has gone through a few different name iterations, but the company is doing away with all that confusion by launching an all-new three-row SUV with a completely different nameplate: the 2020 Hyundai Palisade. Essentially replacing the outgoing three-row version of the Santa Fe, which is currently dubbed the Santa Fe XL, the new Palisade will be the biggest of all Hyundai crossovers and go up against the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and their ilk.

We first heard about this name earlier this year, when Hyundai trademarked the moniker a few months after we first saw spy photos of the new SUV. Then Hyundai showed a concept called the HDC-2 Grandmaster (pictured above) that previewed the look of the Palisade. Based on what we can see from that concept and the test prototype, the Palisade looks to be considerably larger than the Santa Fe XL, which resides on the smaller side of its class. It will have bold styling, with a squared-off profile and interesting lighting cues in both front and rear. It's safe to assume that the interior will be significantly more upscale in design and materials compared with the outgoing Santa Fe XL.

Like its corporate cousin the Kia Telluride, the Palisade is likely to come standard with a V-6 engine mated to an automatic transmission and a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. Fitting into what's expected of vehicles in this segment, it should offer either seven- or eight-passenger seating capacity along with plenty of family-friendly features. Prices should start in the mid-$30,000s and range up to $50,000 when fully loaded.

We'll learn more about the 2020 Palisade when it makes its official debut at the Los Angeles auto show later this month before going on sale sometime in 2019.
