Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi has asked the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) to explain how it was able to come up with how much electricity rates should increase due to the tax reform law.

“I asked Meralco, ‘How did you arrive at 8 centavos?’” Cusi told reporters on Friday.

The Energy chief sent a letter of inquiry to Meralco earlier on Friday.

“Papaano niyo kinompute ‘yan? ‘Yan ang gagawin namin ngayon to scrutinize it,  because we cannot just accept it ... as it is our responsibility to the consumers,” Cusi said.

The Energy chief clarified that he is not actually opposing Meralco’s plan to increase electricity rates but he wants the company to explain how it arrived at its number, because computing electricity rates is part of the Energy department’s mandate to serve the interest of the public at large.

Meralco announced earlier this week that the adjusted excise tax rates on fuel products such as diesel and coal and the re-imposition of value-added tax on transmission charges will result in an P0.0808 increase per kWh starting next month.

This translates to an additional P16.16 increase in electricity bills of a typical household consuming 200 kWh a month. — VDS, GMA News
