The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on Thursday denied that the agency is conducting a tax-related investigation on President Rodrigo Duterte.

In a statement, Commissioner Caesar Dulay clarified that he was "not aware of any ongoing investigation or review of the income tax return of the President and that he has not authorized anyone to conduct one as of today.”

Dulay's clarification came in the wake of a news report that appeared in a daily broadsheet, quoting unofficial sources from the BIR, that the tax agency was investigating the income tax declaration of the President.

The issue of the supposed ITR review came following the more than P3-million increase in Duterte's net worth, shown in his 2017 Statement of Assets Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN), since he assumed the presidency on June 30, 2016.

The BIR chief also reiterated that only his office and the BIR’s official spokesperson can come out with statements on matters concerning the BIR. — John Ted Cordero/MDM, GMA News
