KIDAPAWAN CITY —A school head in a town in North Cotabato was wounded in an attack by still unidentified gunman early morning on Thursday, a police official said.

Superintendent Bernard Tayong, spokesman for the Cotabato Police Provincial Office, identified the victim as Ritchel Celestial Pareno, principal of Barangay Bulol High School, an annex of the Pikit National High School.

An initial police investigation showed that the shooting incident took place at about 7:15 a.m. while Pareno was on her way to work.

Tayong said Pareno was on her XRM motorbike on NIA Road in Barangay Takepan when the gunman shot her, hitting her in the arm.

Wounded Pareno sped towards the Poblacion area where she sought help from friends, who rushed her to a hospital in nearby Midsayap town.

Police are investigating the motive for the attack and hunting the suspect.

On the other hand, Chief Inspector Romy Castanares, Pikit PNP chief of police, said they are eyeing the possibility of professional jealousy as motive for the crime, but did not elaborate as investigation is ongoing.

The attack on Pareno is the fourth shooting incident in the province this week.

Shooting incidents took place in Kidapawan City and Makilala town last Monday and Wednesday respectively, and another one happened in Matalam town.

Since 2010, at least three school heads in North Cotabato have been killed by still unidentified gunmen.

Authorities were still clueless as to the identities of the attackers and the motives for the killings.   —Malu Manar and Williamor Magbanua/LBG, GMA News
