The South Korean government is appreciative of President Rodrigo Duterte’s personal apology in relation to the kidnap-slay of businessman Jee Ick Joo, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo said Friday.

“They appreciated it kasi sabi nila despite the public apology of the President, nagpadala pa ng emissary at personal kong ibinigay sa kanya ang ating paghingi ng paumanhin at pag-share sa kanilang grief,” Panelo said during an interview with GMA News' Unang Balita.

“[Sinabi ko rin] sa kanila our commitment and assurance that we will prosecute the persons behind the killing. At sabi natin, hindi tayo titigil hangga't hindi mabigyan ng katarungan ang hinihingi ng widow,” he added.

Last month, Duterte said he had directed Panelo to apologize to the South Korean government.

“I think Panelo is going there. I told him to make a good apology,” Duterte said in a speech delivered before newly-promoted military officials in Malacañang on January 31.

Panelo said he met with South Korean Prime Minister and Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn on February 2.

“Sabi ni Prime Minister at Acting President, natutuwa naman daw siya and they appreciate our gesture and umaasa sila na magkakaroon ng katarungan,” Panelo said.

During their brief talk, Panelo said he reminded the Prime Minister of the longstanding relationship between the Philippines and South Korean, dating back to the Korean War.

“Pinaalala ko sa kanya na noong 1950, tayo ang unang Asyanong bansa na nagpadala ng 7,400 soldiers noon. And then, pasalamat naman ako sa kanya na nagpadala sila ng tulong sa Typhoon Yolanda. Nagpadala sila ng mga 500 engineers and doctors,” he said.

“In fact, parang malaking deal nga sa kanila 'yun kasi nag-apologize si President Duterte at sinasabi niya na ‘Every Koreyanong nakakausap ko nag-aapologize ako,’ nagpadala pa siya ng personal representative, so they appreciate that very much,” he added.

Jee was killed last year after he abducted by law enforcers allegedly doing anti-illegal drug operations. Several police officers are currently being investigated over the incident. — Erwin Colcol/RSJ, GMA News
