Authorities on Thursday placed the Manila Police District Station 9 on lockdown as they conducted a general cleaning of the entire facility.

A report by GMA News' Cedric Castillo on Balitanghali said doctors from the MPD headquarters also held medical checkups for the inmates during the cleanup.

Security was tightened to prevent detainees from escaping, the report said.

The police station clarified that the cleanup has long been scheduled to be held on Thursday.

The general cleaning comes days after the death of an inmate who had been diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis or flesh-eating disease. The cause of death, however, has yet to be specified.

The inmate was previously detained at Station 9 before he was transferred to Manila City Jail three days before he passed.

Last Tuesday, a seventh inmate diagnosed with a severe skin disease was rushed to the Philippine General Hospital.

Station 9 police said that it should not be presumed that the flesh-eating bacteria was contracted from the facility.

The medical checkups showed that none of the female inmates have any serious skin diseases.

However, some of the men are infected with boils. — Jessica Bartolome/RSJ, GMA News
