MANILA, Philippines — Social Security System chairperson Amado Valdez on Tuesday had a few things to clarify about the announcement that he and commissioner Jose Gabriel "Pompee" La Viña will no longer keep their posts.

On Monday, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque announced that the terms of Valdez and La Viña will soon end.

Valdez, in an interview with radio dzBB, explained that his appointment was only until June 2017 and that he had been staying in a holdover capacity.

"(The term) simply expired... There is no issue with us," Valdez said in the interview.

The outgoing SSS chair added that he was thankful to Duterte for the brief period that he was able to advance his advocacy, including the increase of pension for retirees, at the state insurance agency.

"There are more retirees these days who would accept a pension of less than P4,000 because of the increase," Valdez said.

Valdez, on the other hand, admitted that the method of La Viña in pursuing the anti-corruption campaign was "really unorthodox."

La Viña recently went public with accusations that four top executives of the SSS Commission were using their positions to trade stocks for personal gains.

"He (La Viña) went public... with motivation to show everything is transparent, that this government is pursuing an anti-corruption campaign," Valdez said.

La Viña had filed an administrative complaint against SSS executive vice president Rizaldy Capulong, equities investment division chief Reginald Candelaria and equities product development head Ernesto Francisco Jr. for allegedly trading stocks using information acquired from an SSS-accredited stockbroker. — Patricia Lourdes Viray
