The University of the Philippines has postponed its college entrance examinations (UPCAT) scheduled on September 15 and 16 due to the expected effects of an incoming typhoon.

In an announcement on Twitter, the UP System said the decision was made "in consideration of the nationwide scope of the exam entails synchronized travel arrangements among others which pose undue risks to both UPCAT examinees and UPCAT personnel."

The country, particulary the northern part, is bracing for Typhoon Mangkhut, which will be named Ompong once it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Wednesday afternoon.

Weather forcasters said Mangkhut can intensify into a super typhoon.

UP said the cancellation of UPCAT was based on consultation with UP System officials and weather experts on the latest forecast on Typhoon Ompong and its expected impact on Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboard.

"The Office will announce a new date as soon as possible and provide instructions to all examinees," it said. —Margaret Claire Layug/KBK, GMA News
