A group of volunteer lawyers are working on the possible filing of an impeachment complaint against Vice President Robredo for "economic sabotage," an official of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) disclosed Saturday.

"The basis of the impeachment trial is 'betrayal of public trust,'" DILG Assistant Secretary Epimaco Densing told GMA News Online.

Densing that the volunteer lawyers had initially met on Friday to talk about the complaint.

He said he was present during the meeting, but denied that he was part of the group, whose members he declined to name.

"I'm not part of the legal team, but I will provide the inputs and evidence in the 'betrayal of public trust' part," he said.

He said that one of the basis of the impeachment complaint would be "economic sabotage" due to Robredo's "unverified statements in the international community intended to discredit the Duterte administration in its anti-illegal drugs."

Densing was referring to Robredo's video statement, where she raised the supposed "palit-ulo" scheme and warrantless searches of the police as part of the Duterte administration's war on drugs.

The video, posted by DRCNet Foundation on YouTube last March 13, was scheduled to be played during a side session of the 60th United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs annual meeting in Vienna Austria last March 16.

Densing said that Robredo's statement "has now taken a toll [on] our economic relationship with other countries."

He said the volunteer lawyers are still in the process of looking at other pieces of evidence against Robredo.

In a post last March 16, Densing also called for the impeachment of Robredo "for continuously attempting to sabotage our economy."

'Treason'

In a Twitter post earlier, Solicitor General Jose Calida accused Robredo of "treason" for her video statement.

Calida had offered his office's services to Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, who had also said that he was studying the possibility of filing an impeachment complaint against Robredo.

The vice president had denied that the posting of her video statement was not connected with the filing of an impeachment complaint against Duterte.

The complaint was filed by Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano on Thursday, the same day that the video statement was scheduled to be played at the UN forum.

Impeach, resign call

Earlier in the day, Densing was spotted during a protest of a small group outside the Office of the Vice President in Quezon City.

The DILG official denied that he was with the group.

"I was there to talk to the policeman to be objective in protecting the area and protect the right of free expression of the rallyists," he said.

He added that he also talked to the protesters, and told them to "to respect the ingress egress of the area and the privacy of the neighbors."
