Police have revealed that a man gunned down in front of his girlfriend by a cyclist in Liverpool was a prisoner on day release.

Carl Russell, 27, was shot dead in the Belle Vale area of the city on Sunday morning as he and his partner were getting out of a car.

The victim had been serving a sentence at the Category D open jail HMP Thorn Cross in Warrington, Cheshire, and a spokesman for the prison said it was assisting Merseyside Police with the investigation.

Officers are still appealing for more information about the targeted shooting, which happened in Cornwood Close shortly before 11.30am.

Two men from Belle Vale, aged 33 and 29, were arrested in connection with the murder and were released pending further inquiries on Tuesday.

Police have said the gunman was believed to have been dressed in black with a high-vis orange jacket, and made off on a pedal bike in the direction of Madeira Drive.

He is thought to have been aged in his late 20s and is of medium build.

Mr Russell's family have since paid tribute to him, describing him as "an amazing son, brother, uncle, nephew and boyfriend, who idolised his true love Lakyn".

Their statement continued: "Carl was a mummy's boy who loved his pops. He would do anything for anyone and had a heart of gold. His family and Lakyn were his world. Carl was no angel - he was our lovable rogue.

"At this difficult time we would appreciate the time to grieve and comprehend the loss of Carl in this cold-blooded murder."

According to the Liverpool Echo, Mr Russell survived a previous attempt on his life in 2010 when two masked gunmen forced their way into his home.
