Chinese gambling tycoon Jack Lam is not returning to the country amid allegations of bribery on two former Immigration deputy commissioners, his legal counsel said Thursday.

“It is the consensus of Mr. Lam’s lawyers both abroad and here for him to decline any invitation to return,” lawyer Raymond Fortun, Lam’s counsel, told the Senate blue ribbon committee.

The Senate panel is conducting an investigation on Lam’s alleged P50-million bribery on former Bureau of Immigration (BI) deputy commissioners Al Argosino and Michael Robles in exchange for the release of illegal Chinese workers arrested in Clark, Pampanga.

Lam left the Philippines bound for Hong Kong, days before President Rodrigo Duterte ordered his arrest.

Immigration spokesperson Antonette Mangrobang earlier said Lam left on November 29 onboard a Cathay Pacific flight and has no record of return.

Fortun also refused to comment on Lam’s businesses in Macau.

“We do not wish to brag...I would have no knowledge about his financial earnings,” Fortun told the committee.  — Kathrina Charmaine Alvarez/RSJ, GMA News
