Motorists currently using No. 8 plates, even if they are lawmakers, are using it illegally, as the validity period for such protocol plates had expired in 2016, a Land Transportation Office (LTO) official said Thursday.

Interviewed on Dobol B sa News TV, Director Francis Almora of LTO's Law Enforcement Service said the last batch of No. 8 plates issued to lawmakers had the validity period of from 2013 to 2016 only, or during the 16th Congress.

"In fact po yun pong production po ng plate number na yan, nung 16th Congress, nakalagay naman po yung validity period, yung year 2013 to 2016," he said.

"Wala pong naibigay sa 17th Congress. Wala po tayong production ng plate for 17th Congress," Almora added.

He said although some congressmen returned their protocol plates after the expiration of the validity period, some did not.

"With due respect sa congressman na na-isyuhan nun, nasa kanya po yung ano na pagtanggal ng plaka," Almora said.

Almora, meanwhile, welcomed the order of the House leadership for its members to return the protocol plates issued to them.

"With the advisory po ng pamunuan ng Kongreso, mas madali po nating maipatupad yung pag-check at pag-verify sa mga gumagamit ng plakang ito," he said.
