Back-to-back championships are not really new for the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

According to UAAP stats man Pong Ducanes, the Blue Eagles' championship was the third back-to-back for Ateneo since they entered the league in 1978. A decade ago, Ateneo even started a rare five-peat which ran from 2008 to 2012.

With two consecutive crowns under his belt for Ateneo, is Coach Tab Baldwin getting ready for another dynasty?

"Back-to-back doesn’t look so important if put up next to a five in a row. It’s just like a little bump in the road," Baldwin said in jest.

A five-peat is indeed a rare feat for any college team. But for Baldwin, the Blue Eagles want to pursue excellence.

"We wanna pursue excellence. The championship is one measure of excellence. If that’s a by-product of the way that we do things, we hope to continue to have championships in the future," the former Gilas head coach said.

Baldwin even admitted that they did not really talk about too much about the championship.

"At the back of our minds, that’s the end game of a team — to get a championship, but we don’t talk too much about it. We talk more about how each of these guys can be the best player they can be," Baldwin shared.

For Baldwin, it's more than just a championship. "There’s a greater purpose to what we do." — LA, GMA News
