Cagayan Governor Manuel Mamba on Wednesday said the local government of Cagayan is preparing for the potential wrath of Typhoon Ompong.

The typhoon, situated 1,190 kilometers east northeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar as of 8 a.m. Wednesday, is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Wednesday afternoon.

Cagayan is one of the provinces it is forecast to hit.

PAGASA said Ompong may possibly make landfall in Cagayan and Calayan on Saturday.

In an interview on Balitanghali, Mamba said the provincial disaster risk reduction management council already held a meeting and started implementing preparations agreed upon.

"Kahapon po kami nagkaroon ng provincial disaster meeting at kahit papaano po ngayon ay pumupunta na rin kami sa kalye para ma-implement ang napag-usapan kahapon," he said.

Heavy rains and strong winds that could result in storm surge are to be expected toward the weekend due to the potential super typhoon.

Ompong, the 15th typhoon to hit the country thus far, is expected to pack 200 to 220 kilometers per hour of wind and traverse through Cagayan province, Batanes and Babuyan Group of Islands before proceeding to Taiwan. —Jessica Bartolome/KG, GMA News
